My winter job in the North Sea was over New Year on a little platform called the Auk.
With only 40 or so people on board, it was a friendly little place but I can honestly say I have never eaten such amazing food in such quantities for quite a long time! We were truly spoiled and I was glad of the gym!

Ghost Fishing UK was growing arms and legs and I set up an event at the National Diving and Activity Centre to raise some money for the charity, but also seek out more suitable divers to join our growing team. We laid on diving taster sessions with our hand picked trainers and identified several individuals who we later invited to join our Ghost Fishing course. It is truly humbling to see them out on our missions to recover dangerous ghost gear and they are really flourishing.
In the evening we had the use of the whole marquee and a bar courtesy of NDAC, with superb catering. The venue had proved perfect with no chance of being thwarted by the weather.
The whole team mucked in and made the event very special.
Our speakers did a superb job; Rannvá Tórfríð Jørmundsson from Fourth Element spoke on
Mission 2020 and gave a very motivational talk about ocean plastics.
European Rolex Scholar Mae Dorricott gave an
energetic talk on ocean plastics and microplastics in particular while Charlotte Bolton delivered her talk in
her usual motivational style about SeaSearch.
Seasearch has certainly changed my sea diving forever in the most positive way and I would thoroughly recommend the course to anyone who dives in the UK.
A fantastic summary of the weekend was written up by one of our delegates, a PADI course director. Here's what he had to say:
